Over 100 draws to mid-June 2010, the lowest Mega Millions ball has run from 1 (obviously) to 29 - over half of the 56 numbers in MegaMillions. However, numbers that cover 80% or 90% of results are significantly less. The numbers 1 to 20 represent 91% of ball one results, while 1 to 15 represent 80% of our 100 draws.
If I was playing 10 Mega Millions games, rather than marking 5 numbers in 10 boxes, I would mark ball 1 first in the 10 boxes, restricting it to the numbers 1 to 15.
For ball 2, the absolute range is 4 to 45, but 4 to 28 covers 81 of our 100 draws and 4 to 31 covers 89%. So, I would mark ball 2 on my Mega Millions coupon next, using a range of 4 to 28.
The absolute range for ball 3 is 6 to 51, but 18 to 44 covers 80 of our 100 draws and 17 to 48 covers 91% of all results. I would now mark ball 3 on my coupon, using a range of 18 to 45.
A range of numbers from 11 to 54 is required to totally cover ball 4, but again a much narrower limit can contain most of the results; the numbers 28 to 52 cover 80% of all results, while covering 90% of results requires a range of 24 to 54. For ball 4, I would use numbers 25 to 50.
